🚇 Getting Around Paris

Paris has one of the world's best public transit systems. The Metro is the backbone — 16 lines covering virtually every corner of the city. Single tickets (t+ tickets) cost 2.15 euros each, but buying a carnet of 10 saves roughly 20%. For stays of 5+ days, the Navigo Easy card (2 euros for the card itself) lets you load t+ tickets digitally, while the Navigo Decouverte weekly pass (30.75 euros, Monday-Sunday) offers unlimited travel on Metro, RER, buses, and trams within zones 1-5 — including airport transfers.

The RER (regional express) connects central Paris to airports and suburbs. RER B runs to Charles de Gaulle (CDG) in about 35 minutes for 11.45 euros, and to Orly via the OrlyVal shuttle connection for around 14 euros total. The Roissybus is a cheaper CDG option at 16.60 euros (60-75 minutes depending on traffic).

Buses are excellent for scenic routes — line 69 passes the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and Bastille. Night buses (Noctilien) run after the Metro closes at roughly 1:15 AM. Uber and Bolt operate freely in Paris and are typically 20-40% cheaper than traditional taxis. Taxis charge a minimum of 7.30 euros with metered rates of 1.10-1.60 euros per km depending on time of day.

For a scenic option, the Batobus water shuttle runs along the Seine with 9 stops near major landmarks (1-day pass: 19 euros). Velib bike-share is affordable at 3.10 euros for a day pass (first 45 minutes of each trip free).

🛡️ Safety Tips for Paris

Paris is generally safe for tourists, but pickpocketing is widespread at major tourist sites. The Metro lines 1, 4, and RER B (to CDG) are notorious hotspots, as are the areas around the Eiffel Tower, Sacre-Coeur, and the Louvre. Wear a cross-body bag, keep wallets in front pockets, and be wary of anyone creating a distraction (clipboard petitions, gold ring scams, bracelet sellers).

Areas to avoid at night: Stalingrad/Jaures (10th/19th), Porte de la Chapelle (18th), Chatelet-Les Halles underground passages late at night, and Gare du Nord surroundings after dark. The Champs-Elysees is safe but attracts scam artists.

Emergency numbers: 112 (pan-European emergency), 15 (medical/SAMU), 17 (police), 18 (fire). The American Hospital of Paris (63 Boulevard Victor Hugo, Neuilly-sur-Seine) has English-speaking staff and is the go-to for Anglophone tourists. Hopital Hotel-Dieu on Ile de la Cite is the closest ER to central attractions.

Register with your embassy before traveling. The US Embassy is at 2 Avenue Gabriel (8th arr.) and the UK Embassy at 35 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore (8th arr.).

🌤️ Weather & Packing Guide

Spring (March-May): Temperatures range from 8-19C (46-66F). April and May are ideal with blossoming gardens, but rain is common. Pack layers, a light waterproof jacket, and comfortable walking shoes.

Summer (June-August): Warm to hot, 15-26C (59-79F), occasionally hitting 35C+ during heat waves. Light clothing, sunscreen, and a hat are essential. July and August see the heaviest tourist crowds and some local shops close for vacation.

Autumn (September-November): 7-21C (45-70F). September is arguably the best month — warm, fewer crowds, and Parisian life resumes after summer. October brings gorgeous fall foliage in Luxembourg Gardens and along the Seine. Pack a medium jacket and an umbrella.

Winter (December-February): Cold and gray, 2-8C (36-46F). Rarely snows but feels damp. Museums are blissfully uncrowded. Pack a warm coat, scarf, and waterproof boots. Christmas markets and holiday lights make December magical despite the cold.

Essential gear: Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable — you will walk 8-15 km per day on uneven cobblestones. A compact umbrella and a versatile scarf (doubles as warmth, style, and shoulder cover for churches) are year-round must-haves.
